BACKGROUND: https://gundam.fandom.com/wiki/Duo_Maxwell
PERSONALITY:
Go with the flow, roll with the punches, take things as they come: that's how Maxwell gets through life. He doesn't bother with stressing over the details, instead focusing his energy on living life to its fullest, by whatever ideals and objectives suit his fancy at the time. It's a coping mechanism, because life hasn't been easy for him even from the start. If one knew anything about the darkness in Duo’s past before meeting him, they might be surprised to find that Duo is generally very friendly and sociable, indiscriminate with his smiles, and playfully teasing to just about everyone he meets. He is very talkative and expressive, just as quick to joke as he is to flare into anger, and then to forgive - and sure to let anyone within earshot know exactly how he's feeling.
He’s also a touch meddlesome, readily sticking his nose in the business of others, especially if he thinks he might be able to help. Although the five Gundam pilots were all given their separate mission orders at the dawn of Operation Meteor (the first mission that sent them all to Earth to defend the interests of the space colonies), Duo was the first of them to extend an offer to join forces with Heero Yuy, providing him with shelter and offering to repair Heero’s mobile suit. They didn’t exactly become fast friends, but over the course of the war, Duo managed to establish enough trust and understanding with the notoriously laconic and solitary ‘Perfect Soldier’ that they are able to work close missions together with surprisingly little trouble, given their completely opposite personalities. Duo is also fiercely loyal to his friends and allies, as evidenced by the many times he’s put his own life at risk for theirs. After recklessly stealing an Alliance mobile suit in an attempt to appease the terrorists holding his orphanage hostage, Duo remarked that he is only alive by sheer dumb luck anyway, so he doesn’t mind dying if it’s to help someone else.
Despite his apparently upbeat and friendly demeanor, Duo is far from a foolish optimist. Instead, he could be described as a cheerful nihilist: he doesn't believe in God or in love, but he does believe in the inevitability of death and the importance of living a satisfying and meaningful life, however short it might be. His morbid sense of carpe diem stems from a childhood filled with war, death, and squalor, during which he witnessed many lives end far too early. Duo literally wears his survivor’s guilt on his sleeve: not only were his first and last names adopted as an homage to those few loved ones he had and lost during his childhood on poorest space colony of the L2 cluster, but he also wears his hairstyle and his outfits of black and white (and in the past, a priest’s collar) in memory of the only home he ever knew, the Maxwell Church Orphanage. Duo expresses that his memories of L2 are full of pain, but he also has many treasured memories of his home, his caretakers, and his fellow orphans before Alliance military forces took their lives in the Maxwell Church Massacre. Upon embarking on Operation Meteor to combat Earth’s opressment of the Lagrange point colonies, Duo adopted the moniker “the God of Death.” By re-imagining himself and his Gundam in this way, he was able to cope with both his losses and his inherently destructive role in the war.
Duo often proudly proclaims to never tell a lie, but he has no qualms about omitting or cleverly wording the truth to either get what he wants, or to avoid certain punishment. He is, after all, an expert infiltrator (though with an unfortunate tendency to get caught). When it comes to new acquaintances, Duo is plenty chatty, but not inclined to share his personal information liberally. His charm and friendly demeanor net him plenty of friends and acquaintances, and he’s even inspired others - such as Hilde Schbeiker, a fellow L2 colonist once sworn to the Oz cause as a volunteer soldier and scientist, as well as a small guerilla group of L2 colonists later on - to help the Gundam pilots in spite of the danger of doing so.
Nevertheless, his friends and fellow pilots know little to nothing of the trauma that Duo has endured throughout his short lifetime, not does he ever share much else about his personal life. His bonds with other people can seem shallow as a result. The truth is that Duo is a drifter, most at ease when he’s constantly on the move… such as when he’s on his old friend Howard’s salvaging boat in the middle of the ocean. Even his on-again, off-again relationship with Hilde - with whom he’s jointly owned a salvage yard on L2 since the end of the first Eve War - isn’t enough to keep him grounded. When needed, Duo often has to be hunted down, and even Preventer (a paramiltary peacekeeping force formed after the war, which Duo briefly participated in) can have a hard time finding him.
As Duo is the only Gundam pilot whose likeness was internationally televised, plain ol’ paranoia of being recognized by an unsympathetic ex-military type is definitely a contributing factor to his cageyness. Duo never admits such outright, but after his rough childhood and his extensive, often brutal participation as a child terrorist in the wars, it’s not hard to imagine how this teenager might be suffering from enough PTSD to make relating to the average person a difficult feat indeed.
